Description

Award-winning Canadian Author and illustrator, Elise Gravel has teamed up with Innu author Melissa Mollen Dupuis to bring us Nutshimit: In the Woods.

The Innu word Nutshimit signifies the physical and social space to practice traditional activities and language. In this first-person account, Melissa and Elise take us on a journey through the culture, from creation legends to Innu life today.

Melissa also takes us through a forest bath. “A what?” you may ask. You’ll just have to read the book and see! Along the way, readers will learn Innu nature vocabulary (did you know that kakacshu is the Innu word for crow?). And of course, this being an Elise-illustrated book, the pages are populated with hilarious characters and plenty of fun details. Melissa’s colloquial and open tone and anecdotes from her lived experiences make the book extra personal.

  • About the Author

MELISSA MOLLEN DUPUIS is a member of the Innu community of Ekuanitshit on Quebec's Côte-Nord. She specializes in sharing the culture of her people with non-Indigenous audiences through her writing and directing and is the co-founder of the Quebec branch of the Idle No More movement.

ELISE GRAVEL is an award-winning author-illustrator from Quebec. She has won a Governor General's Award for Children's Illustration in French, and is well known for her original, wacky picture books and graphic novels. After completing her studies in graphic design, Elise found herself quickly swept up into the glamorous world of illustration. Her old design habits drive her to work a little text here and there into her drawings, and she loves to handle the design of her assignments from start to finish. She is inspired by social causes and likes projects that can handle a good dose of eccentricity.
